"Marcell Turner is a photographer and film maker based in the Bay Area who has had a camera in his hand one way or the other since he was a child. Growing up in San Diego he developed a love of skateboarding which he has passed down to his son and daughter.
Currently living in Alameda, California he shoots all over the Bay Area both for commercial clients and his own investigations of nightlife, street life, local characters, and political movements. His recent images of the Black Lives Matter protests in Oakland were featured with his writing in Bob Cut Mag. His work has also been published in Thrasher magazine and USA Today.
His visceral documentary style is influenced by some of his photography heroes such as Gordon Parks, W. Eugene Smith and Saul Leiter. His portraits call to mind the eye of Richard Avedon and Irving Penn.
Marcell’s love for cinema can be seen in the dramatic way he captures what some would consider mundane everyday moments. His short films have a dreamlike quality that make the contemporary moment eternal. He is driven by a desire to capture authenticity and follows street photography rule number one: Be there.
